Measuring the superfluid fraction of an ultracold atomic gas.

چکیده
We propose a method to measure the superfluid fraction of an atomic gas. The method involves the use of a vector potential generated by optical beams with nonzero angular momenta to simulate uniform rotation. The induced change in angular momentum of the atomic gas can be measured spectroscopically. This allows a direct determination of the superfluid fraction.

Atomic Bose and Anderson glasses in optical lattices.
An ultracold atomic Bose gas in an optical lattice is shown to provide an ideal system for the controlled analysis of disordered Bose lattice gases. This goal may be easily achieved under the current experimental conditions by introducing a pseudorandom potential created by a second additional lattice or, alternatively, by placing a speckle pattern on the main lattice. We show that, for a nonco...
متن کاملQuantum quench of an atomic Mott insulator.
We study quenches across the Bose-Hubbard Mott-insulator-to-superfluid quantum phase transition by using an ultracold atomic gas trapped in an optical lattice. Quenching from the Mott insulator to the superfluid phase is accomplished by continuously tuning the ratio of Hubbard tunneling to interaction energy. Excitations of the condensate formed after the quench are measured by using time-of-fl...

We propose an experimental implementation of a topological superfluid with ultracold fermionic atoms. An optical superlattice is used to juxtapose a 1D gas of fermionic atoms and a 2D conventional superfluid of condensed Feshbach molecules. The latter acts as a Cooper pair reservoir and effectively induces a superfluid gap in the 1D system. Combined with a spin-dependent optical lattice along t...
متن کاملVortex pairing in two-dimensional Bose gases
Recent experiments on ultracold Bose gases in two dimensions have provided evidence for the existence of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase via analysis of the interference between two independent systems. In this work we study the two-dimensional quantum degenerate Bose gas at finite temperature using the projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation classical field method. Although this de...
متن کاملProbing the Bose-Glass–Superfluid Transition using Quantum Quenches of Disorder
We probe the transition between superfluid and Bose glass phases using quantum quenches of disorder in an ultracold atomic lattice gas that realizes the disordered Bose-Hubbard model. Measurements of excitations generated by the quench exhibit threshold behavior in the disorder strength indicative of a phase transition. Ab-initio quantum Monte Carlo simulations confirm that the appearance of ex...
